The Kia Sportage is a mid-size SUV with one of the biggest boots in its class. It holds 543 litres with the back seats up and 1829 litres with them folded flat. The pram, the weekly shop and a set of sports bags all fit at once. Australia gets the long-wheelbase body, so the back seat is roomy for adults as well.
Under the bonnet is a 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 115kW and 192Nm, driving the front wheels through a six-speed automatic. Official combined fuel use is 8.1 litres per 100km on 91 regular unleaded. It tows up to 1650kg braked and sits 181mm off the ground, which covers a gravel driveway or a boat ramp.
Kia fits the safety gear as standard rather than as an extra. There are seven airbags, including one between the front seats, plus autonomous emergency braking that reads pedestrians, cyclists and oncoming traffic at intersections. Adaptive cruise control, blind spot assist, rear cross traffic assist, lane keep assist and lane follow assist are all standard. So are a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. ANCAP tested the Sportage in 2022 and gave it five stars.
