Car Lease Approval Requirements (Australia 2026 Guide)
What Carzie checks when you apply for a car lease in Australia, and practical steps to improve your chances of approval in 2026.
Carzie · 13 April 2026 · 9 min read
This guide is for anyone who has been declined for a vehicle lease, or who wants to check their chances before applying.
At Carzie, we think it helps to be upfront about what we look for. That way you understand your position and what you can improve.
A Carzie consumer car lease works differently from a novated lease or a traditional car loan. There's no lump sum deposit, and no employer involved. You make fixed weekly payments over a three to four year lease term. You're paying to drive the vehicle. Carzie covers the registration and comprehensive insurance. Many vehicles still carry a manufacturer's warranty, especially newer models.
Your weekly payment already includes registration and insurance. So our affordability check looks at that whole figure, not just a bare finance repayment. The rest of this guide walks through the eligibility criteria. It also covers practical steps to improve your chances before you reapply.
Basic eligibility checklist
If you only read one section, read this one.
Age: you must be 21 or older.
Driving licence: you need a valid Australian provisional or full driving licence.
Residency: you need to be an Australian citizen or permanent resident.
Income: your income needs to comfortably cover the weekly lease on top of your existing commitments. It can come from a salary, Centrelink, or superannuation. We generally look for a buffer of $150 to $200 after your outgoings.
Credit score: you don't need a high credit score. A score of around 300 or above gives you the best chance of approval.
Carzie runs credit and affordability checks as an authorised representative (Australian Credit Representative No. 573586) of Alpha Car Finance Pty Ltd, Australian Credit Licence 411447. We need to be satisfied the lease suits your financial situation.
If you don't meet the basic criteria, a decline is likely. Fixing these issues first will meaningfully improve your chances.
How the approval process works
The approval process runs through a few stages, each one building a picture of your financial situation:
Online pre-approval: instant identity checks and general information.
Bank statement review: we look at your last 90 days of statements.
Final approval: we check any remaining information and confirm your identity.
Vehicle collection: once approved, you arrange to collect the car and drive it for the rest of the lease term.
A novated lease needs employer sign-off and a three-way agreement. This is different: a direct lease between you and Carzie. There's no salary packaging or pre-tax deductions, just straightforward weekly payments.
Approval rests on three things:
Identity and licence verification
Stable income or employment with manageable expenses
Credit score and financial history
Meeting the minimum criteria doesn't guarantee approval, but it improves your odds significantly.
How to improve your chances
If you've been declined, these changes can strengthen your next application over one to six months.
1. Update your ID and address
If you've moved, make sure every document shows your current address and that they all match.
2. Review your credit report
Get a current copy of your credit report and check it for errors or issues you can address.
3. Pay off small overdue debts
A small paid default looks better than an unpaid one. Clearing these can help your credit score.
4. Reduce buy-now-pay-later use and subscriptions
These affect how we calculate affordability, so cutting back can help your application.
5. Stabilise your income
Passing probation, or staying with the same employer for more than three months, can meaningfully improve your eligibility.
6. Build a healthy bank history
Aim for three months of statements with no dishonours and all commitments paid on time. That's generally the sweet spot for approval.
Quick tip: work out your own budget using your last three months of transactions. Compare it to your expected lease payments to see how much buffer you have left. If the buffer is tight, a smaller or cheaper vehicle from Carzie's range might suit you better for now. You can always upgrade in a future lease once your income or profile is stronger.
Identity, licence and residency requirements
Failing a basic ID or licence check causes an immediate decline, even when your income and circumstances look fine.
Documents you'll need:
Clear colour photos of the front and back of your Australian driver's licence, showing your current address
If your address doesn't match, extra proof such as a tenancy agreement, employment contract, or a utility bill from the last three months
A second form of ID may be requested during verification, such as an Australian passport, Medicare card, or birth certificate
Licence requirements:
You need a valid full or provisional driving licence for the full lease term
Learner permits aren't accepted
Residency and visa requirements:
Australian citizens and permanent residents are eligible
Temporary visa holders, including students, working holidaymakers and sponsored visa holders, aren't eligible
Make sure your name, address and date of birth match across every document and your application form. A mismatch causes delays or triggers a manual review.
Income and employment requirements
We look at whether your weekly lease payment is realistic, given your income and job stability.
Employment types we accept:
Full-time and part-time PAYG employees
Casual employees with consistent hours over three or more months
Self-employed people with income that can be verified through bank statements
If you're not employed, you'll need income that can sustain your outgoings, such as Centrelink payments or superannuation savings.
Employment history we look for:
At least three months in your current role
Twelve months of continuous work history in Australia (helpful, but not essential)
Income verification: we use secure, read-only access to your last 90 days of bank statements to verify your income. If your income looks irregular, we may ask for more. This could be a payslip, an employment offer, or a letter from your employer.
For example, take someone earning $1,200 a week with $400 in existing repayments, who applies for a $220 a week lease. They have a good chance of approval. Now take someone earning $800 a week with $600 in existing obligations, applying for that same $220 a week lease. They're unlikely to be approved.
If you were declined, focus on building stable hours, finishing probation, or reducing your existing commitments before you reapply.
Living expenses, existing debts and affordability
We have responsible lending obligations. That means we check your budget after rent, groceries, bills and other debts. You need enough room left for the lease payment, plus a safety buffer.
Expenses we assess:
Rent or mortgage payments
Utilities and groceries
Transport
Childcare
Personal loans and credit cards
Buy-now-pay-later or subscription services
Other car finance or loans
We compare your declared expenses against your actual spending in your bank statements, not just what you tell us. Heavy buy-now-pay-later use or frequent gambling transactions can hurt your affordability assessment.
Ways to improve this:
Pay down small loans or credit cards before applying
Close credit limits you don't use
Cut discretionary spending for two to three months so your bank history looks healthier
Be upfront about every existing commitment from the start
Credit history and past financial behaviour
You don't need a perfect credit score, but serious issues can block approval or limit which vehicles you can choose.
What we look for:
Payment defaults, typically within the last five years
Court judgements
Bankruptcies or Part IX debt agreements
A recent high volume of credit applications
Recent unpaid defaults, an active bankruptcy, or a current debt agreement will likely lead to a decline. Small, paid defaults are considered case by case, so it's worth paying these off where you can.
Before you apply:
Check your credit report for free through Equifax, Experian, or illion
Fix errors or clear small debts before you submit your application
Keep every current payment on time
Set up direct debits so you don't miss a payment
Avoid unnecessary new credit applications
Pay off overdue defaults where possible
If your credit history is thin or limited, keep one account well managed for several months before applying for a larger lease. Every application leaves an enquiry on your file, so avoid applying with several finance providers at once.
How Carzie's online application works
Carzie's application is fully online and takes about five minutes.
Complete the pre-approval form to check your eligibility
Choose your vehicle and lease term
Provide your bank statements securely
Get your approval decision
Collect your vehicle
Your weekly payment already includes registration, comprehensive insurance, and often a manufacturer's warranty, which makes budgeting simpler than managing these costs separately.
Key takeaways and next steps
Being declined now doesn't mean never. Plenty of people are approved after making a few targeted changes.
Your approval checklist:
Stable income with a buffer after expenses
Manageable existing debts and a healthy debt-to-income ratio
Clean recent bank history, with no dishonours and consistent income
Valid ID and eligible residency status
A vehicle choice that matches your budget
Use this checklist before you start, or restart, your Carzie application. If you think you now meet the criteria, start your application or talk to our support team about your situation.
Can I get approved if I've just started a new job?
Possibly, but we generally need at least three months of employment stability. A strong overall profile and good credit history can help offset a shorter work history.
Can Centrelink be counted as income?
Yes, Centrelink is generally accepted as an income source. We'll still look at your spending habits and outgoings to work out affordability.
Do I need to pay a deposit?
You'll need to pay two fixed weekly payments upfront to secure your car. That's it. No large lump sum deposit like some other providers ask for. No upfront cost of buying a car outright, either.
Can I still be approved with past defaults?
Yes, it's possible. Small, paid defaults from a while ago may be overlooked, but recent unpaid defaults will cause issues.
Is a co-applicant or guarantor allowed?
Carzie leases are structured as individual consumer leases. Contact our team to discuss your specific circumstances.
How soon can I reapply after being declined?
Wait until your circumstances have genuinely improved. We typically recommend waiting two to three months, with real changes in place.
